Hello

Dirk's 2019 Return

Who am I?

I am Dirk.
My time as a web developer in the early days of the World Wide Web was one of the happiest stages in my colorful professional life, a phase I am now looking to resurrect.
Quick Reference:
  1. JavaScript incl. ES6, AJAX, JSON, Node.js, canvas, ...
  2. PHP incl. PDO, MySQL, OOP, MVC, LAMP/XAMPP, debug-setup, ...
  3. HTML (v. 3-5), CSS (v.1-3)
  4. WordPress (incl. Gutenberg and custom CSS)
  5. Visual Studio Code, Notepad++, Geany, Gedit, Dreamweaver, ...
  6. GIMP, Photoshop, Illustrator, ...
  7. Mac, Windows, Linux
  8. QuarkXPress, LibreOffice, MS Office
  9. ...

Let's dive a little deeper.

My Designs

You can explore my site-design abilities on this and other sites of mine. The one you are looking at is a parallax long-scroll single-page design with a hide-and-show-on-scroll menu.
Although my primary strength lies in coding, I have a little talent in graphic design, too. At times this can be useful.
Here are some graphic design samples created mostly in Photoshop, Gimp, and Illustrator:

My Devs

Web development focuses on the tools, markup, and code to make a web site work. I have been working to catch up to the new technologies and changes since I last worked in this field. The below images link to sample pages on my experimental website. Clicking them will make you leave this page:

JavaScript: Cookie Bookmarklet

And here is a tiny bit of code by me that you can try out in your browser. I wrote it recently. It's a JavaScript bookmarklet-code which lists the names and contents of JavaScript-accessible cookies on any webpage you visit when you activate the bookmarklet (a.k.a. favlet). You can try it here by clicking on this link: JS-Cookies. If you want to install it in your browser you can simply drag this link into your bookmarks bar at the top of the window where it will become a button if there is enough free space. Or you can add it to your bookmarks menu via a process starting with an alt-click on the link. However, some browsers don't allow these methods. So, alternatively, you can copy the below code and paste it directly into the URL of a bookmark you are editing:

Note: Keep in mind that less and less cookies are accessible by JavaScript nowadays for security reasons. So, a site you visit may place a gazillion cookies on your device that a JavaScript bookmarklet cannot identify. Your browser may sport 'Developer Tools' that can.

JavaScript: Window Stats Bookmarklet

Another little bookmarklet I whipped up the other day to help me with responsive design (since equivalent functions in browsers seem to come and go) is this little window stats checker: WinStats. I share it here, too, in case you may have some use for it:

WordPress

Modern complex web sites, when created from scratch, need entire teams of various specialists to build.

Since reinventing every wheel is very inefficient, Content Management Platforms (CMS) now exist. They resemble construction sets and also come with sophisticated templates and plugins that work right out of the box.

Their many parts keep getting developed, updated, and expanded by professionals, communities, and companies, thus saving a lot of costs and time in creating all but the most unconventional websites and keeping their technology up to date.

WordPress.org

This is a perfect solution for mid and small size businesses (and also some large ones).

I have chosen this route for my next step since it comes with the most bang for the buck and offers the most options. The most popular and widely used CMS is Wordpress. With this I can create nifty websites all by myself.

During my Wordpress course I created this course project — experimenting with the new Gutenberg editor and numerous plugins, and adapting a free theme with custom CSS for a modern look & responsive design (sadly the current hosting service is often very slow):

WARNING: The site is fast, but the current free hosting service often has a huuuuuge response lag or gets completely stuck.
